Chapter 14

Rogue

All day I’d been thinking about what Misty had said, the words tumbling over and through my head again and again. My bear was content. He was happy. I actually hadn’t realized how unhappy my bear had been until now. It was strange, knowing that a deep and integral part of me had been miserable for so long. It was weird what was going on with me now. It was almost like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. The pleasure the bear felt was like a drug, it was so good.

I couldn’t believe it had taken me this long to realize how Misty felt. I’d started noticing a couple days ago, but I had no idea how deeply until I heard her today. It made me feel stupid, blind, and like a total asshole for all the years I’d made her watch me do all the shit I’d done.

I wanted our first date to be special. There was a really fancy French bistro about forty-five minutes outside town that she really liked. It was expensive, and she didn’t get to go out often. It was the one place I knew she would love. I glanced at my watch, it was only a little after lunch. I hoped they wouldn’t be booked up already.

I dialed and they answered on the third ring. “Bistro Arabesque, how may I help you?”

“Yes, I was hoping to book a table for tonight? Party of two?”

“I’m so sorry, sir. We booked our last reservation for tonight about ten minutes ago.”

I winced. “Are you sure there’s no way you could squeeze us in? Even if it’s late. I’ll take your last seating if that helps.”

“No, sir, I’m sorry, I can put you on the waitlist if that would work?”

A thought occurred to me, a shit thought, but it might be the only way.

“No, that’s okay. I’ll try again later this week.”

“Wonderful, we look forward to seeing you.”

I hung up and glanced at my laptop. Misty wouldn’t approve, but… sometimes desperate times require desperate measures. I opened the computer and logged into the bistro’s website. Then hacked their booking and reservations portal. A few minutes later I found an eight o’clock reservation for a table for two. I stared at the name for several seconds.

“Sorry, pal, I hope this isn’t too embarrassing for you,” I whispered as I deleted the name that was there and replaced it with mine. I then found the original email address assigned to that reservation and hacked the guy’s account and erased the email as well, effectively making it appear as if the rez never even existed.

With that done, I left to make myself as presentable as I could. A haircut and beard trim, a stop on the way home for a new pair of jeans, then a shower to get ready. I still found myself fully ready with over an hour to spare. As I sat on my couch, staring at the wall, thinking and overthinking how this would go, the time ticked slowly by.
